ARABISK FILMFEST

Arabisk filmfest is an annual festival held in Bergen that showcases internationally recognized and award-winning films from and about the Arab region. We aim to highlight diverse classic and mainstream films that contribute to a more inclusive and representative film culture. Through various genres such as drama, comedy, thrillers, and documentaries, the festival provides a unique insight into a culture and a world that Western audiences often only see through the news.

Screening categories:

  • In our Fiction program, we are proud to present a diverse range of films that showcase the talents and perspectives of Arab filmmakers from across the region. Our selection includes both established and emerging voices, with works that explore a range of themes and styles. From intimate slice-of-lifes such as Under the Fig Trees to lighthearted romantic comedies such as All Roads Lead to Rome, these films offer a window into the complexities of contemporary Arab life and culture.

  • Our documentary selection features a collection of powerful and thought-provoking films from the Arab world that we can't wait to share with you. This year's lineup includes From Meir, to Meir, an intimate portrayal of a once flourishing town and its inhabitants and Foragers which depicts the complexities of foraging for wild edible plants in Occupied Palestine with a combination of humor and meditative pacing. We hope that these films will speak to audiences, inspire them and foster a deeper understanding of the diverse experiences and perspectives that shape our world.

  • Occupation is a selection of short films that aims to shine light on the experiences of people living in occupied regions of the Arab world. This selection features powerful and thought-provoking short films that explore the themes of resistance, resilience, and hope in the face of adversity. Through the power of film, we aim to provide a platform to uplift the voices of filmmakers living under occupation or in exile, and to shed light on life under systems of oppression.

  • Short films offer a unique and accessible medium to explore emerging voices and viewpoints within the film industry, therefore we are excited to present a diverse selection of films that showcase the talents and perspectives of Arab filmmakers.

Among the films featured in this year’s selection are Warsha, a powerful short film which explores LGBTQ+ themes and Syrialism, an experimental docudrama directed by Dalia Al-Kury. Furthermore, we are thrilled to have the directors Karrar Al-Azzawi, Mike Malajalian as well as Dalia Al-Kury visiting the festival to share their unique insights and creative processes with our audiences. We hope you enjoy the program and the opportunity to engage with these remarkable filmmakers.

  • With our Retrospective selection, we invite you to join us on a journey through time and rediscover the heritage of Arab cinema. Through our program which highlights the golden age of Egyptian film, we aim to pay tribute to the pioneers who have shaped the present and continue to inspire future generations of filmmakers.
